FLORENCE, SC – For the second time this season, Francis Marion University junior Kevin Taylor has been named the Peach Belt Conference men’s tennis Player of the Week, this time for the two-week period ending April 6.
Taylor, a 6-5 junior from Benoni, South Africa, compiled a 3-1 record playing at the No. 1 singles position and a 4-0 mark playing No. 1 doubles during the two-week period. He helped lead Francis Marion to a 3-1 record, including PBC victories over 14th-ranked Columbus State University and 31st-ranked Lander University. The latter was FMU’s first win over Lander since 1976.
In singles action, Taylor tallied a three-set win over the nation’s fifth-ranked player and a straight-sets win over the 36th-ranked player. His lone loss came by scores of 2-6, 7-6, and 7-6. Among his doubles wins was a victory over the 15th-ranked duo in Division II.
For the season, Taylor is ranked No.15 among singles players in NCAA Division II with a 14-3 mark, and he is ranked 21st in doubles competition with a 14-3 record.
In the most recent ITA Wingspan Collegiate Tennis NCAA Division II Top 40 rankings released Wednesday, the 14-4 Patriots moved up one spot to No. 21. FMU has won nine of its last 10 matches.
Francis Marion will play its final regular season match on Sunday when the Patriots entertain Anderson College at 1 p.m. The PBC Tournament is set for April 14-16 in Spartanburg.
