FLORENCE, S.C. – Several Francis Marion University student-athletes have received awards for their work off the playing fields during the past week.
Senior women’s basketball player Jennifer Howard earned the Duane P. Myers Honors Award and the Scholastic Achievement Award at Francis Marion’s recent Academic Awards Day ceremony. Howard was also the recipient of the Debra Lee Orander Swamp Fox Academic Award at the school’s 2005 athletic banquet. Howard, who ended her career 14th on the Patriots’ all-time assists list (244) and 26th on the career scoring list (890), carried a perfect 4.0 grade point average into this week’s final exams. The Raleigh native is majoring in biology and chemistry.
Also at the academic awards day, senior women’s basketball player Michelle Ghere was presented the Mathematics Award and the Physics Award, while former volleyball player Jackie Ackman earned the Biology Award.
Senior women’s softball player Amber Gaines was recently chosen as the recipient of a $1,000 graduate school scholarship from Pi Gamma Mu, an international honor society for the social sciences. She is one of only 10 students nationwide to earn the scholarship this year. Gaines, a psychology major, will graduate Summa Cum Laude in May. She has been accepted by several graduate schools, including FMU, and is still deciding where she will attend.
