FLORENCE, SC – The Francis Marion University men’s tennis team is ranked 20th in the end-of-the-season ITA Wingspan Collegiate Tennis NCAA Division II Top 40 poll.
The young Patriot squad concluded its 2005 campaign with a 17-6 record, one victory shy of the school record for wins in a season, set in 1999 and 2000. FMU also made its 10th NCAA Division II national tournament appearance in the past 11 seasons. Francis Marion did not have any seniors listed on its 2005 roster.
During the 2005 season, FMU was ranked 23rd, 23rd, 23rd, 22nd, 21st, and finally 22nd in the last regular season poll.
Under the direction of 13th-year head coach Garth Thomson, FMU finished fifth during the Peach Belt Conference regular season and fifth at the PBC Tournament. All six of FMU’s losses were to nationally ranked opponents, and five were by narrow 5-4 decisions.
Francis Marion has appeared in the end-of-the-season national poll each of the past 10 years, and 11 of the past 12 seasons. Thomson has compiled a 190-93 career coaching record at the helm of the Patriot program.
FMU rebounded from an 11-12 mark in 2004.
