FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University junior Kevin Taylor has been named the 2005 Mid-Atlantic Region’s “Player To Watch” by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Taylor, a native of Benoni, South Africa, occupied the No. 1 singles position for FMU, and is currently ranked 15th among Division II singles players. He compiled a 19-3 record, including an amazing 11-0 mark against Top 50 opponents. He also recorded a 16-6 doubles mark at the No. 1 slot.
He was named to the Peach Belt Conference All-Conference Team, twice earned PBC “Player of the Week” recognition during the 2005 season, and was recently selected as his squad’s most valuable player.
Taylor helped lead the 22nd-ranked Patriots to a 17-6 record and a spot in the NCAA Division II Tournament, FMU’s 10th tournament appearance in the past 11 seasons. The team’s season victory total was one win shy of the school record set in 1999 and 2000.
The young Patriot squad did not list any seniors on its 2005 roster.
Armstrong Atlantic State University’s Dale White (20-15 singles record) was named the regional “Senior Player of the Year” and received the ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship. The University of North Florida’s Eduardo Pereira (19-4) was named the ITA regional and national “Rookie of the Year.” Taylor did not play either of these players on the singles court in 2005.
