FMU's Bouknight and Aleman Named to All-Region Softball Team
FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University senior center fielder Betsy Bouknight and freshman shortstop Allie Aleman have been selected to the 2005 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association NCAA Division II All-South Atlantic Region Team.

Bouknight was named to the first-team, while Aleman was a second-team choice.  Bouknight, also a second-team All-Region pick in 2004 and 2002, joins former catcher Laurie Niego as the only Patriot softball players to earn All-Region honors three times, since FMU moved to NCAA affiliation in 1992.

Bouknight, a 5-3 left-handed hitting Leesville native, batted .397 this past season and led the Patriots in hits (60), triples (4), and stolen bases (27 in 32 attempts), despite missing six games midway through the season with an injury.  She tied for the team lead in home runs with eight, although she had hit only three in her previous three seasons.  The speedy leadoff batter registered a .442 on-base percentage and was second on the squad in runs scored (41) and slugging percentage (.656).  In the field, she compiled a .929 fielding percentage with eight outfield assists.

During the 2005 campaign, she hit safely in 32 of 43 games, had 20 multi-hit contests, and recorded a team-best nine-game hitting streak.

Bouknight ended her career as the school’s all-time hits leader (236), while posting career totals of 177 runs scored and 98 stolen bases (111 attempts) in 191 games.

Aleman, a 5-5 Santa Ana, Calif., native, led Francis Marion in hitting (.404), slugging percentage (.661), and on-base-percentage (.450).  Despite missing the team’s last 13 games with an injury, she compiled season totals of four home runs, 16 doubles, and 33 RBIs.  She scored 23 runs and stole nine bases (in 12 attempts), while striking out only nine times in 121 plate appearances.  She recorded 13 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI contests.

The two helped lead Francis Marion to a 36-14 record and a fifth-place finish during the Peach Belt Conference regular season.  The Patriots narrowly missed earning an invitation to the NCAA Division II national tournament.

Bouknight is a product of Batesburg-Leesville High School, where as a senior she batted .392 and earned All-Area, All-Region, and All-State honors.  Aleman is a former two-time All-Serra League selection at Mater Dei High School.
