FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University baseball team is ranked 14th in the final 2005 Collegiate Baseball Magazine NCAA Division II Top 30 poll, released on Monday, the highest end-of-the-season ranking for the Patriots since their move to NCAA affiliation in 1992.
The Patriots ended their season 34-16-1, one win shy of the school record for victories in a season. Francis Marion made its second NCAA national tournament appearance in three years. Ten of FMU’s 16 losses this season were to nationally ranked opponents.
The Patriots, unranked in the preseason poll, appeared in the final 14 polls of the 2005 campaign, including six weeks spent in the Top 10.
Six Peach Belt Conference squads are listed in the end-of-the-season poll, including four in the Top 15. Florida Southern College, which defeated PBC member University of North Florida in the national championship game, occupies the No. 1 position.
Francis Marion was ranked 18th in the final poll of the 2003 season. In 2004, FMU appeared in the first six national polls, but then dropped out of the rankings.
