BB&T is new sponsor for FMU Golf Corporate Challenge

FLORENCE, SC - Francis Marion University golf coach Mark Gaynor has announced that Branch Banking and Trust Company (BB&T) will serve as title sponsor for his program’s fifth-annual Corporate Challenge golf tournament scheduled for Sept. 8-9.  The 36-hole event will again be hosted by The Country Club of South Carolina in Florence.

The Challenge is a four-player team stroke event, handicapped by 75 percent of USGA handicaps.  A maximum field of 32 teams is expected to be filled by corporations and individuals from throughout the Pee Dee region and the state. Players will be competing for personal prizes as well as having their corporate name engraved on the tournament’s perpetual trophy on display at The Country Club of South Carolina.  Tournament registration also includes player gifts, lunch, refreshments for both days, and a veranda party and awards ceremony following the final day of play.

“BB&T is honored to have the opportunity to support the Francis Marion University golf program through this new sponsorship,” said BB&T senior vice president Frank James.  “We look forward to partnering with FMU as we both strive to make a difference in the communities in which we live.”

BB&T assistant vice president Paul Seward added, “It is a privilege to have this opportunity to support my alma mater and assist the FMU golf program as it moves ahead into the ranks of NCAA Division I competition.”

“This event continues to have a great impact on the success of the FMU golf program,” stated Gaynor.  “This year as our golf program moves to the Division I level, the proceeds from the Challenge will help greatly in our ability to compete at the highest level.  It will aid us in recruiting the best players possible and in travel to compete against the best competition in the country.  I am looking forward to another competitive Corporate Challenge and wish to give a special thank you to BB&T for coming on board this year as the title sponsor.

“FMU would also like to thank Rick Beasley and the Carolina Bank for their dedication over the past four years as the title sponsor.  In that time, the event raised more than $60,000 to benefit the Patriot golf program.”

BB&T is rated as one the country’s safest and soundest financial institutions, and is built on a tradition of excellence in community banking that stretches back to 1872.  BB&T offers a complete range of financial services including banking, lending, insurance, trust, and wealth management solutions.  It has more than 1,400 branches in 11 states and Washington D.C.  BB&T has 26,000 employees and is ranked as the ninth largest financial holding company in the United States with total assets topping $100.5 billion.  The Florence office is the headquarters for the Coastal Region and is headed by Frank Bullard.

The Country Club of South Carolina’s experience and solid reputation for civic contributions and support of charitable and corporate events make it particularly well suited to host this tournament.  Additionally, the course presents a challenging layout that has served as host of first- and second-stage qualifying for the PGA TOUR and home site of 10 years for the South Carolina Classic, a NATIONWIDE TOUR event.
