FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University softball coach Stacey Johnson has announced that Shannan Tyson of Seminole, Fla., will attend FMU this fall and play for the Patriots in 2006.
Tyson, a 5-8 infielder, is a graduate of Seminole High School, where she played for coach Mark DeRuzzo. At FMU, she may also play in the outfield and behind the plate.
A right-handed batter, she hit .435 as a senior, with a team-high 37 runs scored, nine doubles, 10 runs batted in, and a .495 on-base percentage. She helped lead the Warhawks to a 19-6 record.
Tyson was a four-time All-Pinellas County Athletic Conference selection, and also earned All-County honors four times. As a senior, she was named to the All-Suncoast team, and was consistently ranked among the top five hitters in the county.
Francis Marion loses only two seniors off its 2005 squad that was 36-14, and for the second year in a row narrowly missed earning a bid to the NCAA Division II national tournament. Tyson will be among nine newcomers on the 2006 Patriot roster.
