FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University athletic department has begun its 2005-06 Swamp Fox Club fund-raising campaign with goals of $125,000 and 800 members.
Recognizing the nickname of the university’s namesake, the Swamp Fox Club is the fund-raising arm of the Francis Marion athletic program. FMU sponsors 14 intercollegiate sports, seven each for men and women. Two of the programs, men’s golf and women’s soccer, recently received provisional status for NCAA Division I membership.
According to FMU athletic director Murray Hartzler, “The mission of the organization is provide a quality college experience for student-athletes as well as scholarship support for each team, as established under NCAA guidelines. Last year, we had 639 members, and this year we are shooting for 800.
“This is a very exciting time for Patriot athletics. The reclassification of two of our programs to Division I will present additional challenges to the Swamp Fox Club.”
Depending on the amount of the contribution, different membership privileges are afforded Swamp Fox Club members. Memberships are available to both individuals and businesses. All the money raised benefits every athletic team at the university.
Annually, more than 170 student-athletes receive some scholarship assistance from the athletic booster club.
