FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University women’s softball team will take part in several fundraising events during the month of October.
The Patriot squad will play an exhibition game against the Faculty Fossils, Wednesday (Oct. 19) at 5 p.m. on the FMU Softball Field. The opposing team will be comprised of FMU faculty members.
Admission to the game is free, but the faculty squad will be taking donations for the House of Hope. The House of Hope, located at 1020 W. Darlington St. in Florence, is an outreach of New Life Rescue Ministries. It opened in April 1999 and provides shelter for homeless women and their children.
On Monday, Oct. 24, the Patriot softball team will sponsor a Home Run Derby on the FMU Softball Field. Participants can take 10 swings for $5. Hitters will bat against a pitching machine. Competition will begin at 4 p.m., and the hitter at the end of the day with the most home runs will be crowned the inaugural champion. All proceeds will go toward assisting the FMU softball program.
The week of Oct. 17-24, the Patriot softball team will be collecting plastic grocery bags. These bags will be given to the Manna House in Florence. Bags can be given to any softball team member, or dropped off at the softball office in the Smith University Center or at the Home Run Derby.
The Manna House, located at 450 Jarrott Street in Florence, provides food for the needy through a soup kitchen and a food pantry.
