FMU's Taylor Loses 3-Set Semifinal at ITA Tournament

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Francis Marion University senior Kevin Taylor lost a heart-breaking 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 semifinal decision to Juan Carlos Osorio of the host school Florida Gulf Coast University, Friday morning (Oct. 14) in the NCAA Division II competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Championships.

Taylor, seeded second in the Division II bracket, won the opening set, but was unable to pull out a second- or third-set win. Osorio advances to Saturday morning’s Division II championship match, while Taylor will face Casper Steenkamp of Abilene Christian University in the third-place match, Saturday at 8:30 a.m.

Earlier this month, Taylor, a native of Benoni, South Africa, captured the Mid-Atlantic Region singles title on Oct. 3, the first FMU men's player to win an ITA regional championship.  Taylor was 19-3 last spring and ended the 2005 season ranked 12th among Division II singles players.

Osorio, a native of Quito, Ecuador, improves his singles record to 29-1 as a member of the FGCU squad.
