With win, FMU's Taylor Claims Third Place at ITA Tournament

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Francis Marion University senior Kevin Taylor defeated Casper Steenkamp of Abilene Christian University 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to claim third place in the NCAA Division II competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Championships, Saturday morning (Oct. 15).

Taylor entered the three-day event seeded second in the Division II bracket. He is the first Patriot men’s player to advance to the ITA championships.

Matias Oddone of Drury University won the Division II men’s title with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Juan Carlos Osorio of the host school Florida Gulf Coast University. Osorio rallied to defeat Taylor in three sets in Friday’s semifinals.

Taylor, a native of Benoni, South Africa, captured the Mid-Atlantic Region singles title earlier this month.  He was 19-3 last spring and ended the 2005 season ranked 12th among Division II singles players.
