FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University senior forward Katie Riley has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Team for the University Division.
Riley earned third-team honors, a year after gaining second-team recognition in the College Division. FMU is in its first year of transitioning to NCAA Division I affiliation.
This awards program is conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America. District III includes Florida, Georgia, Virginia, and North and South Carolina. Riley was one of six players from a Palmetto State school to make the All-District squad.
Riley, a native of Hampstead, Md., leads the Patriots in scoring with seven goals and two assists.
Off the playing field, the biology major possesses a 3.81 GPA. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Beta Beta, and Chi Alpha Sigma honor societies, and is a member of the university’s Ecology Club. She has been named to both the Peach Belt Conference Presidential and FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic honor rolls three times. In 2004, she earned All-America honors for her efforts both on the field and in the classroom.
Riley has played in 67 career matches and stands second on the Patriot career lists for goals scored (45), points (109), and shots (210).
The 5-7-1 Patriots will conclude their season this weekend in Kennesaw, Ga., when they participate in the Independent Cup. FMU will face the University of Northern Colorado, Saturday at 2 p.m., and Kennesaw State University, Sunday at 4 p.m.
