FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University golf coach Mark Gaynor has announced the signing of Christopher Couch of Summerville to a national letter of intent during the recent early signing period. Couch will attend FMU and play for the Patriots in the fall of 2006.
Couch is a senior at Stratford High School, where he has played under the direction of coaches Ashley Harvey and Tom Knock.
He tied for 18th place at the AAAA state tournament this past spring as Stratford finished 16th. As a sophomore in 2004, he led the Knights to a seventh-place tie in the team standings.
He is currently ranked eighth in the state according to the South Carolina Junior Golf Association, and is fourth among high school seniors.
Since the first of June, he has compiled four top-five finishes, including a first-place finish at the “Big I” event and tying for fourth at the recent Tradition Four Ball tournament.
He won the 2003 Junior Azalea Tournament.
“I am very pleased to have signed such a high quality recruit,” said Gaynor. “Christopher has a great work ethic and will fit in nicely with our program. The thing I am most excited about, is that Christopher is excited about Francis Marion. He is a very consistent and steady player. Currently, his short game is his best attribute.”
Francis Marion is currently in its first year as a provisional NCAA Division I member. The Patriots tallied a 26-22-1 mark during the recent fall season, including a pair of top-four finishes.
