FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University baseball coach Art Inabinet has announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Cory Deering of Summerville to a national letter of intent during the recent early signing period. Deering will attend FMU in the fall of 2006 and play for the Patriots in the spring of 2007.
Deering is a senior at Summerville High School, where he plays for coach Burt Bazzle.
As a junior this past spring, he compiled a 6-2 record with a 2.40 earned run average and 64 strikeouts in only 52 innings. At the plate, he batted .340 with two home runs and 34 runs batted in.
Deering earned 8-AAAA All-Region honors in 2005 and garnered an SHS Gold Glove Award, while helping lead the Green Wave to an 18-11 record. Summerville advanced to the AAAA state playoffs before being eliminated by the eventual state champion.
“Cory is a 5-10, 185-pound lefty with good command of the strike zone,” said Inabinet. “He can throw his curve or change-up for a strike at any time. He also has a good move to first and can hold runners. With this addition, I feel as good about our pitching staff and its completeness as I ever have at FMU.”
Francis Marion was 34-16-1 this past spring with a No. 14 national ranking, and earned its second invitation in three years to the NCAA Division II national tournament.
