FLORENCE, SC – The Francis Marion University men’s and women’s tennis teams are both ranked in the 2005 fall ITA NCAA Division II Top 40 polls.
The Patriot men are ranked 15th, while the women occupy the No. 36 position. The No. 15 ranking is the highest for the Patriot men since the end of the 2001-02 campaign when Francis Marion was listed 12th.
The FMU men return eight letterwinners from last year’s 17-6 squad that finished one victory shy of the school record for wins in a season. FMU made its 10th NCAA Division II national tournament appearance in the past 11 seasons, and ended the year ranked 20th.
The Francis Marion women’s squad returns all seven letterwinners from last year’s 10-15 team.
Individually, senior Kevin Taylor is fourth nationally in the men’s singles rankings, while junior Chatwinder Singh is 17th. The doubles team of Taylor and Singh is ranked 16th in that category.
Both FMU programs are under the direction of head coach Garth Thomson, who is entering his 14th season. Thomson has compiled a 190-93 career record on the men’s side and is 138-127 at the helm of the women’s program.
