FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University senior swingman Vony Rivers has been named the Peach Belt Conference’s “Player of the Week,” for the week of Nov. 21-27.
In two games last week, the 6-2 Burton, S.C., native averaged 22.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game, despite not starting and coming off the Patriot bench. He connected on 64.3 percent (18-28) of his field goal attempts, including nine-of-13 (60%) three-point attempts. He also had a pair of blocked shots.
Rivers tallied a career-high equaling 18 points in a road loss to 7th-ranked Mount Olive College on Nov. 22, and then scored a career-high 27 points in an 82-54 win over Mars Hill College last Saturday.
Currently, he ranks fifth in the PBC in scoring (16.0 ppg), sixth in three-point field goal percentage (48.1%), and 10th in overall field goal percentage (55.4%).
The 3-2 Patriots open Peach Belt Conference play on Wednesday when they play host to USC Upstate at 7:30 p.m.
Rivers is a graduate of Battery Creek High School. He played his freshman season at Erskine College, where he was named the 2002 CVAC Freshman of the Year.
