FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University men’s basketball team will play its final game of the 2005 calendar year when the Patriots play at Mars Hill College, Saturday afternoon (Dec. 17) at 2 p.m.
The game time has been moved up two hours from a previously announced 4 p.m. start. Live in-game stats can be followed at www.sports.mhc.edu.
Francis Marion is 5-3, but the Patriots have not played since a Dec. 5 win over Wingate University. Senior Vony Rivers leads the Patriots in scoring with a 14.8 points per game average. Rivers tallied a career-high 27 points in FMU’s 82-54 victory over Mars Hill, Nov. 26 in Florence.
Francis Marion will be without the services of second-leading scorer George Walker (14.3 ppg). Walker will remain in Florence to receive his undergraduate degree during the university’s commencement exercises Saturday morning. The Patriots will regain the services of swingman Reinaldo Charles, who had to sit out the first semester. The 6-4 senior averaged 8.3 ppg and led the squad with 44 made three-pointers last season.
Mars Hill (5-4) is led by 6-3 senior Walt Baxley with a 26.4 ppg average. The Patriots held Baxley to only four points on one-of-nine shooting in the earlier meeting.
The FMU women’s basketball team will play its final contest before the new year on Tuesday when the Patriots visit North Carolina Central University (7-1) for a 6 p.m. contest.
Both FMU squads will return to action on Jan. 4 with a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Ga.
