FLORENCE, S.C. – The Swamp Fox Writing Project at Francis Marion University has announced the winners of its fourth-annual Langston Hughes Poetry Contest.
More than 200 area elementary, middle and high school students submitted imitations of three of Hughes’ best-known poems. The contest was judged by FMU faculty.
Winners are:
Elementary Division
First place: Danique Sawyer, Brunson-Dargan Elementary School
Second place: Ellen Parrish, Brunson-Dargan Elementary School
Third place: Jada Richardson, Brunson-Dargan Elementary School
Middle School Division
First place: Lauren Burt, Montessori School of Florence
Second place: Michelle Fix, Savannah Grove Elementary School
Third place: Leah Cort, Savannah Grove Elementary School
High School Division
First place: Abby Wach, West Florence High School
Second place: Nadia Hooks, Darlington High School
Third place: Cameron Bolton, Marion High School
