DEGREES AWARDED AT FMU COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES MAY 6

            FLORENCE, S.C. – Three-hundred-and-thirty-eight degrees were awarded during commencement exercises at Francis Marion University, Saturday, May 6.

            These included 275 undergraduate degrees and 30 graduate degrees awarded by Francis Marion and 33 bachelor’s degrees awarded through a cooperative nursing program with the Medical University of South Carolina.

            The William H. Blackwell Award was presented by Tim Norwood, vice chairman of the FMU Foundation, to Joni Godwin Alford of Andrews, Jacqueline Elizabeth Lane of Mullins, and Stephanie Adams Strickland of Coward. The Blackwell Award, named in memory of the founding chairman of the FMU Foundation, is presented to the undergraduate Francis Marion University student, or students, with the highest grade point average (for all academic work undertaken at FMU) of those graduating during the past academic year. All three students compiled perfect 4.0 grade point averages.

            Alford, a product of Andrews High School, graduated in December 2005. While at FMU, she received the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship and the Arthur and Rebecca Parson’s Scholarship. She was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi and Kappa Delta Pi honor societies, and graduated in three-and-a-half years. An early childhood education major, she was presented the Thomas W. Sills Memorial Award in Early Childhood Education and the Scholastic Achievement Award at the university’s recent 2006 academic awards ceremony. She is currently teaching first grade at Scranton Elementary School, and plans to enter graduate school and pursue a master’s degree in school guidance.

            Lane, a graduate of Myrtle Beach High School,is graduating with a major in psychology and collaterals in chemistry and biology. She received a LIFE Scholarship and has been inducted into Psi Chi, a psychology honor society, Psi Chi. At the 2006 FMU academic awards ceremony, Lane received the Psychology Award. She plans to pursue graduate studies in school psychology.

            Strickland, a product of Lake City High School, graduated in December 2005. She was the recipient of the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship and the FMU Academic Excellence Scholarship. A chemistry major and a mathematics minor, she was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. At the academic awards ceremony, she received the FMU Outstanding Senior Chemistry Major Award and the American Institute of Chemists’ Student Award. She is working as a chemical research technician and plans to enter medical school this fall.                                                                                              

            Norwood also recognized the recipient of the Distinguished Professor Award for the 2005-06 academic year: professor of music Benjamin Woods. Woods has been a member of the FMU faculty since 1972.

            Ten FMU students completed degree requirements with a cumulative grade point average of 3.9 or higher and received their degrees summa cum laude (with highest honors). They were Ashley Elizabeth Davis-Young of Hemingway; Dana Lynne Goodwin of Dillon; Colleen Melissa Martin and Natalie Renee Martin of Effingham; Jessica Nichole McCutcheon of Scranton; Kathleen Lorraine McKee of York; Morgan Beth Windham of Hartsville; and Ryan Edward Huntley, Natalie Renee Roland, and Virginia Elizabeth Williams of Florence.

            Receiving degrees magna cum laude (with high honor) were 12 students who completed degree requirements with a cumulative grade point average between 3.75 and 3.89. They were Shane Clifton Bakazan of Dillon; Jessica Renee’ Bartlett of Cumming, Ga.: Monica Faye Cox of Pamplico; Lacy Nicole Danikas of Myrtle Beach; Courtney George Dease of Scranton; Sarah Joy-Hatampa Jackson of Hartsville; Betty Elaine McCray of Bishopville; Kathryn Nicole Riley of Hampstead, Md.; Jonathan Joel Runion of Findlay, Ohio; and Kelli Nicole Campbell, Adam Daniel Martin, and Matthew Paul Sanderson of Florence.

            Three nursing students received their degrees with honor: Hope Armstrong Camper of Florence and Catherine McBride McCaskill of Conway received their degrees magna cum laude (3.80-3.89), while Michael Edmund Mayberry of Florencereceived his degree cum laude (3.70-3.79).

            Honorary Doctor of Humanities degrees were conferred upon United States Senator Lindsey O. Graham of Seneca,  Florence businessman W.O. “Billy” Powers, and former South Carolina first lady Iris Rhodes Campbell of Georgetown County.                                         

            Graham was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002, and currently serves on four committees: Armed Services, Judiciary, Budget, and Veterans Affairs. A native South Carolinian, he earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of South Carolina. Graham logged six-and-a-half years of service on active duty as an Air Force lawyer. In 1988, Graham went into private law practice and in 1992 he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. In 1994, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Since 1995, Graham has continued to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force Reserves and is the only U.S. Senator currently serving in the Guard or Reserves.

            Powers has spent more than 40 years building his construction company, Powers Construction, into a recognized name across the Southeastern United States. A native of Timmonsville, Powers is a graduate of Timmonsville High School. He attended Clemson University, where he studied civil engineering. In addition to Powers Construction, his business interests include Mini-Max Warehouses Inc., Price-Carolina Aqua Pools Inc., Community Health Services Inc., Powers Aviation LLC, Powers-Godbold Construction Co., U.S. Coatings, and The Willows Inc. Powers is very active in the community, and has been involved with the Florence Rotary Club, the S.C. Chamber of Commerce, the Florence Optimist Club, the Florence Economic Development Partnership Board, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts Presidential Advisory Board. He is a recipient of the Order of the Palmetto. Powers is a member of the FMU Foundation Board.

            Campbell was born in Liberty, S.C., and in 1959, she married Carroll Ashmore Campbell Jr. Mr. Campbell was elected Governor of South Carolina in 1986. As South Carolina’s first lady for eight years, Mrs. Campbell dedicated her time to many charities including the American Cancer Society, the March of Dimes, the Carolina Children’s Home and the Food for Hungry Children campaign. Mrs. Campbell was involved with Get Alarmed South Carolina, a program providing low-income homes with smoke detectors and Wings, Inc. a horseback riding camp for the handicapped. After Hurricane Hugo crippled the state’s coast, Mrs. Campbell, along with religious leaders, implemented Adopt A Family, where church members would adopt families in need. After Gov. Campbell was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, the Campbell family became involved with the Palmetto Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, which has an annual golf tournament to raise money to help fight the disease. Since Gov. Campbell’s death in December 2005, Mrs. Campbell continues to work with the Alzheimer’s Association and she serves on the advisory board of the University of South Carolina library.

            Graham was also the commencement speaker.

            Richard N. Chapman, provost at FMU, presided at the commencement ceremony. Luther F. Carter, president of FMU, gave the official welcome and conferred the degrees.

            Pamela A. Rooks, director of the FMU Honors Program and professor of English, presented honor cords to five students: Rebecca Joy Brunson of Rembert, Ronald Davis Carter Jr. of Lake City, Anna Elizabeth Poston of Pamplico, Brandi T. Watts of Green Sea, and Virginia Elizabeth Williams of Florence. Honor cords are presented to graduates who compile a minimum grade point average of 3.25 for all academic work and for a minimum of 21 hours in Honors courses.

            Carolyn B. Shortt, a member of the FMU Board of Trustees, presented diplomas to graduate students, while H. Randall Dozier, also a member of the FMU Board of Trustees, presented diplomas to undergraduate students.
