Prior to coming to FMU, he was a business support specialist for Boeing/McDonnell Douglas Aerospace at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.

He was also a graduate teaching assistant at Virginia Tech and George Washington.
He has published seven articles, and has given numerous presentations at local, regional, national and international mathematics conferences. He is also the recipient of several grants. Fitzkee has been a member of the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical Society. He was elected South Carolina state director for the MAA Southeastern Section beginning in fall 2006. He also serves as faculty adviser to FMU’s Math Club.
“(FMU) President (Fred) Carter and I look forward to working with Tom Fitzkee in his new role as chair of the Department of Mathematics,” said FMU provost Richard Chapman. “Tom will provide excellent leadership for the math program at FMU.”
