Nichols, Ridgill Named FMU's 2006 Outstanding Employees

          FLORENCE---Otis Nichols and Virginia Ridgill, both of Darlington, have been named outstanding staff employees of the year at Francis Marion University.

     The awards were presented July 26 during the staff awards luncheon, which also honored FMU employees for length of state service.

     Nichols is a craftsman in building maintenance, and Ridgill is administrative associate in the Psychology Department.

     Nichols has been employed at FMU for almost 29 years and Ridgill for nearly 32 years.  Both were cited for their dedication to their jobs and for service above and beyond the call of duty.

     FMU President Fred Carter presented Nichols and Ridgill with plaques and $1,000 checks in recognition of winning this annual award for FMU employees.  Rev. Terry Alexander was the guest speaker.

    Elizabeth I. Cooper of Florence, director of community relations, was cited for 30 years of state service. 

    Employees honored for 20 years of service include: Michael G. Hawkins of Florence, associate athletic director for media relations and marketing; Emanuel L. Johnson of Darlington, supervisor of maintenance support/maintenance pool; Joe H. Mehaffey III of Florence, supervisor of physical science programs; Shara L. Moore of Florence, director of financial planning; Pamela B. Radcliffe of Florence, systems librarian; David E. Reaves of Effingham, electrician; Bryan C. Turner of Effingham, master craftsman-electrician; and Lillie W. Watson of Florence, administrative assistant-housing and residence life.

      Employees recognized for 10 years of service were: Cynthia L. Harding of Florence, director of admissions; John J. Kispert of Florence, vice president for business affairs; Jesse T. Perkins of Effingham, manager of utilities and outside services; and John T. Pickett of Florence, estate groundskeeper.

     Eleven employees who are retiring from FMU were also recognized— Debra L. Bazen of Pamplico, director of Patriot Bookstore, 28 years of state service; Janet R. Braddock of Effingham, executive assistant to the president, 32 years; James C. Carroll of Darlington, student services counselor financial assistance, five years; Dale L. Gilchrist of Blenheim, associate director of financial assistance, 30 years; Joseph E. Heyward of Florence, vice president for student affairs, 32 years; Gayle W. Polston of Florence, director of student services/ nursing, 25 years; Eleanor K. Rogers of Dillon, administrative assistant to executive director of foundation, 34 years; Johnny L. Sanders of Florence, estate groundskeeper, six years; Earline D. Smith of Florence, cook, 19 years; Olivia K. Thompson of Latta, student services counselor financial assistance, 29 years; and Cleybianne C. White of Florence, reference technical assistant, 26 years.
