Degrees Awarded at FMU Commencement Exercises December 16

    FLORENCE, S.C. – Two-hundred-and-sixty-eight degrees were awarded during commencement exercises at Francis Marion University Saturday, Dec. 16.

    These included 203 undergraduate degrees and 65 graduate degrees awarded by Francis Marion.

    Six FMU students completed degree requirements with a cumulative grade point average of 3.9 or higher and received their degrees summa cum laude (with highest honors). They were Erin Ashley Gandy of Darlington; Tressa Lane Hancock of Patrick; Morgan Michelle Harwood of Hornell, N.Y.; Lashonda Sierra Rush of Andrews; William G. Raines and Michelle Krystn Stephens of Florence.

    Receiving degrees magna cum laude (with high honor) were seven students who completed degree requirements with a cumulative grade point average between 3.75 and 3.89. They were Josephine Walker Dion and Kimberly Louise Parnell of Hartsville; Ashley Elizabeth Godbold of Florence; Alyssa Lyn Hardin of Surfside Beach; Laura Rose Mitchell of Darlington; Danielle Monet Nelson of Salters; and Shirley Elizabeth Webster of Latta.

    Seventeen students completed degree requirements with a grade point average between 3.50 and 3.74 and received their degrees cum laude (with honor). They were Aleisha Allison Ainsworth of Lake City; Tiffaney Nicole Brown of Kingstree; Ryan Brad Carsten of Scranton; Jessica Bernnet Graves of Marion; Mary Elizabeth Hardwick of Mullins; Barbara Calhoun Jones and Synthea Taylor Joyner of Florence; Mark William Keller of Delano, Tenn.; Lindsay Michelle McClary of Dalzell; Tiffaney Danielle McCutcheon and Renee Evelyn Roberts of Olanta; Tamron Eugene McManus of Lamar; Laura Beth Middleton of Timmonsville; Rebecca Nicole Miles of Pamplico; Terrinique P.     Honorary Doctor of Humanities degrees were conferred upon attorney, author and historian Eugene Noel Ziegler Jr. of Florence, retired educator and minister Marvin W. Lynch of Pamplico, and retired educator Joseph E. Heyward of Florence.            

     Zeigler has practiced law in Florence since 1949 and is presently counsel in the law firm of Haynsworth Sinkler & Boyd, P. A. This native of Florence, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of the South and his law degree from Harvard Law School. Zeigler served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and served on four aircraft carriers in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He remained active in the Naval Reserve and retired with the rank of captain. He also taught political science at Francis Marion College when it became a four-year, degree granting institution. This author of three books, Florence, A Renaissance Spirit; Barnwell Blarney; and Refugees and Remnants has earned him the title of “Florence Historian”. Zeigler was also the commencement speaker.                                                                      

    An ordained Baptist minister, Lynch serves as a volunteer chaplain for FMU. He is also active in Calvary Baptist Church, the Florence Baptist Association and the South Carolina State Baptist Convention. After serving as director of admissions and an instructor in business administration for 25 years, Lynch retired from FMU in 1995. His career includes his service as executive director of the Pee Dee Area Big Brothers Association and as a teacher and coach at Ridge Spring-Monetta High School and Pamplico High School. Lynch earned an associate’s degree at North Greenville College before going on to earn an undergraduate degree from Furman University and graduate degree in management and supervision at Central Michigan University.                                                  

    After a 32-year career serving in a number of roles at FMU, Heyward, vice president of student affairs, retired. During his tenure, he also served as director of student facilities, assistant dean of student affairs, academic counselor and instructor of mathematics. Throughout his career, Heyward has served as area representative for U.S. Senator Ernest Hollings, assistant superintendent, teacher and principal for Florence School District One, a teacher in Norfolk, Va., a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army and interim provost at FMU. Heyward earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics at Hampton Institute in Hampton, Va., a graduate degree in mathematics from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md., and a doctorate in student personnel administration from the University of South Carolina.

    Richard N. Chapman, provost at FMU, presided at the commencement ceremony. Luther F. Carter, president of FMU, gave the official welcome and conferred the degrees.

    Pamela A. Rooks, director of the FMU Honors Program and professor of English, presented honor cords to two students: Jessica Ann Ellibee and William G. Raines of Florence. Honor cords are presented to graduates who compile a minimum grade point average of 3.25 for all academic work and for a minimum of 21 hours in Honors courses.

     William W. Coleman Jr., a member of the FMU Board of Trustees, presented diplomas to graduate students, while T. Hal Campbell, also a member of the FMU Board of Trustees, presented diplomas to undergraduate students.
