FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University men’s and women’s basketball teams will open the new year with a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Armstrong Atlantic State University, Wednesday evening (Jan. 4) in Savannah, Ga.
The women’s game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in AASU’s 5,000-seat Alumni Arena, followed by the men’s contest at 7:30 p.m. Live in-game action can be followed through the AASU website at www.athletics.armstrong.edu.
The Francis Marion men have won three straight games and are 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the PBC. However, the Patriots have not played since a Dec. 17 win over Mars Hill College. Senior Vony Rivers leads the Patriots in scoring with a 14.6 points per game average, while senior George Walker is averaging 14.3 ppg.
Armstrong Atlantic State, winner of four straight, is 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the Peach Belt. The Pirates lead the all-time series 15-12, including a pair of wins last season. Timmonsville native Bryan Taylor leads AASU in scoring (14.9 ppg), while also hauling down 8.8 rebounds per game.
The FMU women’s team (3-5, 1-1) will see its first action in 15 days when it takes on the Lady Pirates (6-4, 1-2). Francis Marion leads the women’s series 14-11, including a five-point win in Florence last season.
Senior Danielle Moore leads FMU with averages of 16.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. She needs only 17 points to become the 23rd Patriot to score 1,000 career points.
Both FMU squads will return home on Saturday (Jan. 7) to host Georgia College & State University for a Peach Belt doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m.
