FMU Readies for Spring Golf Schedule

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University golf team will begin the 2006 portion of its schedule, Feb. 13-14, at the Matlock Collegiate Classic, hosted by Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fla.

The Patriots, who concluded their fall schedule with a 29-22-1 record, are in their first year of transitioning to become an NCAA Division I member after competing in Division II for the past 14 seasons.

Following the Florida Southern tournament, FMU will play host to the inaugural Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Tournament, Feb. 27-28, on Hilton Head Island.

The 54-hole event will be played on the par 72, 6,875-yard Wexford Plantation Golf Course. “I am very happy to bring college golf back to Hilton Head Island, and to partner with such a wonderful golf course and plantation of Wexford’s caliber,” said FMU head coach Mark Gaynor. “The membership and staff of Wexford, including head golf professional Bob Fulton, have welcomed us, and I hope that we have started a relationship that will last for years to come.”

The 15-team field includes Francis Marion, Davidson College, East Carolina University, Eastern Michigan University, Furman University, University of Iowa, Iowa State University, Kansas State University, Marquette University, Miami University (Ohio), Northern Illinois University, University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, University of Toledo, Wofford College, and two-time defending NCAA Division II national champion USC Aiken.

Wexford already hosts the MCI Heritage Classic, Class “A” Professional Qualifier.

The remainder of the Francis Marion spring schedule consists of Davidson’s Birkdale Intercollegiate (March 10-11) in Huntersville, N.C.; USCA’s Palmetto Intercollegiate (March 13-14) in Aiken, S.C.; the 37th-annual Furman University Intercollegiate (March 24-26) in Greenville, S.C.; and the Wofford Invitational (April 3-4) in Spartanburg, S.C.
