FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University junior right-hander Jessica Johnson has been selected as the Peach Belt Conference women's softball "Pitcher of the Week" for the week of March 7-13.
Johnson, a 5-7 native of Palm City, Fla., posted a 3-1 record last week with a minuscule 0.27 earned run average in 33 innings. She tossed back-to-back three-hit shutouts against Lander University and Ashland University. She also beat Gannon University 5-2, allowing only one earned run, before losing a 2-1, 12-inning decision to 11th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne College on Sunday in the Patriot Invitational Tournament at Freedom Florence. In that loss, she did not allow an earned run, and struck out six while throwing 154 pitches.
For the week, she allowed just the one earned run and 20 hits, while fanning 20 in 33 innings. She was also 1-for-3 with three runs scored at the plate.
Johnson leads the Patriot pitching staff with a 7-3 record and a 2.04 season ERA. Last year, she became the first Patriot hurler in 16 seasons to win 20 games with a 20-9 mark.
Francis Marion (13-7, 2-4) will return to action on Wednesday when the Patriots entertain PBC foe USC Aiken for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
