FLORENCE, S.C. – The 17th-ranked Francis Marion University baseball team will play host to second-ranked Georgia College & State University for a key three-game Peach Belt Conference series beginning Friday (March 24).
The two squads will play a single game on Friday night at 7 p.m. on FMU's Cormell Field, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Patriots, winners of six straight, are 20-8 overall and 6-3 in the PBC, one game behind the conference-leading Bobcats (25-4, 7-2).
GC&SU will be the highest ranked opponent to visit Florence since a No.1-ranked GC&SU squad played at FMU, March 9-10, 2002. Francis Marion took two of three games from the Bobcats in that series, including a doubleheader sweep (6-5 and 3-1) on March 9.
During that 2002 season, FMU had the oddity of facing the nation’s top-ranked team on three weekends in a five-week span: at No. 1 University of North Florida on Feb. 9-10, hosting No.1 Kennesaw State University on Feb. 23-24, and hosting No.1 GC&SU on March 9-10.
Over the past five years, Francis Marion owns a 31-36-1 mark against nationally ranked opponents.
FMU won the opener of a 13-game homestand on Wednesday night against Wingate University, and the Patriots are 83-17-1 in their last 101 home contests.
