Patriots volleyball team holds Senior Night; other FMU squads on road

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University women’s volleyball team will hold Senior Night on Friday (Nov. 2) when the Patriots conclude their regular-season schedule against UNC Pembroke.

The match will start at 7 p.m. and admission is free.

Francis Marion (12-20, 3-6) needs a win against UNCP (19-15, 3-6) to possibly finish third in the PBC regular-season standings.

Prior to the match, Francis Marion will honor its two seniors: Jackie Phiel and Michelle Settergren. Phiel, a native of Amherst, Ohio, is a four-year starter who has appeared in 141 career matches, is fifth on the Peach Belt Conference’s career list for digs with 1,667, and owns 1,095 career kills. Settergren, a native of Walnut, Calif., was the 2004 PBC Freshman of the Year, has appeared in 136 career matches and owns career totals of 973 kills and 290 blocks.

The Patriot women’s soccer team (9-7-1) will play the final match of its 2007 campaign on Friday night when the Patriots travel to Campbell University (1-13-2) for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Both the FMU men’s and women’s cross country squads will run on Saturday morning in the NCAA Division II South Region Championships. The meet will be held at Sharon Johnston Park in New Market, Ala., and will begin at 9 a.m. with the women's 6,000-meter race, followed by the men's 10,000-meter race at 10 a.m.

The top three teams in each race, as well as the top two individuals from each race (not a part of a qualifying team) will advance to the Division II National Championships, November 17 in Joplin, Mo.   The men’s regional field will include 24 teams, while 32 squads will compete for the women’s region title.
