FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University women’s tennis team learned Friday that it has earned an invitation to participate in the NCAA Division II Tournament. This marks the Patriots’ second straight trip, and seventh in the past 13 years.
The 62-team women’s field consists of 16 regional tournaments. FMU will play in the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Savannah, Ga., May 3-4, at Armstrong Atlantic State University. Each regional winner will advance to the national finals, May 9-12, in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
The 15-7 FMU women, who are ranked 19th nationally, will play 11th-ranked Georgia College & State University (20-7) on Thursday, May 3, at 11 a.m. The other women’s first-round match pits second-ranked and 2005 national champion AASU (25-0) against unranked Fayetteville State University (19-4) at 9 a.m. The winners will play on May 4 at 10 a.m.
The Patriots are under the direction of 15th-year head coach Garth Thomson, who has amassed a 173-140 career coaching record.
The May 3 match between FMU and GCSU will be a re-match of last weekend’s fifth-place contest at the Peach belt Conference Tournament, which Francis Marion won 5-2.
Altogether six PBC women’s teams earned invitations to the Division II national tournament.
