SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Francis Marion volleyball squad picked up a hard-fought five-game Peach Belt Conference volleyball match on Wednesday evening over host Armstrong Atlantic State. Game scores were: 30-22, 30-28, 28-30, 21-30, 15-13.
The Patriots (11-18, 2-4 PBC) avenged a five-game loss to the Pirates (13-17, 3-3 PBC) earlier in the season in Florence with the win.
After FMU won the first two games, the Pirates rallied to take the next two, then led 10-7 in game five before the Patriots were able to close out the match. AASU hit -.105 with seven errors in the fateful final game.
Krissy Mordini led all players for the Patriots with 21 kills, while reigning PBC Player of the Week Jessica Lombardi turned in a fine all-around match with 18 kills, 13 digs and eight blocks. Jess O*Leary collected 50 assists while Jackie Phiel notched 19 digs.
The Pirates were led by Brendyce Budd*s 17 kills and 19 digs, while Gwen Clarke notched 15 kills and Hannah Segebart tallied 47 assists. Nicole Yates collected 17 digs on the night, leaving the sophomore just 11 digs shy of setting a new single-season record at AASU. Yates now has 430 digs on the season, with the record of 440 set by Christina Flores in 2004.
Francis Marion blocked effectively as well with 15 team blocks, compared to just nine for the Pirates.
Francis Marion returns to action on Tuesday (Oct. 23) when the Patriots visit Augusta State at 7 p.m.
