FLORENCE, S.C. – Senior forward Ashley Fortune set an NCAA single-match record for assists with eight, while also scoring four times to equal the NCAA Division I single-game mark for total points (16), as Francis Marion University rolled to a 14-0 shutout of Howard University, Sunday afternoon (Oct. 21) in women’s soccer action.
Francis Marion (7-6-1) celebrated Senior Day with its highest scoring output as an NCAA Division I member, and the second-highest in team history behind only a 16-0 blanking of Anderson College in 1997. The 14-goal total also represents the season-high for Division I programs in 2007. Howard, playing its third match in four days, drops to 2-12-0.
Fortune’s eight assists are an all-time any division single-match NCAA record and surpasses the previous Division I record of six, set by four players – most recently by Marit Foss of Jacksonville University during the 2000 season. The total also breaks the FMU mark of four, set by Katie Riley in 2004 and Chris King in 1996. Fortune’s four goals equal the Division I season-high for 2007 and represent the Bothell, Wash., native’s third career hat trick. She now has 38 career scores.
Fortune’s 16 total points equals the Division I single-match record set by Kristen Arnott of Saint Francis (Pa.) University in 2000.
Three of Fortune’s assists came in the opening 9:09 as the Patriots quickly jumped to a 3-0 lead. Her fourth helper came on a Kirby Stenard goal in the 29th minute as FMU led 6-0 at intermission. Fortune assisted on a Rebecca Nelson tally in the 55th minute and then helped on the Patriots’ final three scores in the 75th, 76th, and 84th minutes.
Stenard, who ranks 17th in Division I in goals per game, recorded her second career hat trick with three goals and also had one assist. Sophomore Angela Salem scored twice and assisted on three goals. Senior defender Jody Rhoderick scored once, while freshmen M.A. Burrows, Kristi Caldwell, Gabi Byrd and Nelson all recorded their first career goals.
Francis Marion scored its 14 goals on only 22 shots, while limiting Howard to four shots. The Lady Bison took the only five corner kicks in the match.
Senior Patriot goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin upped her school career-record for saves to 272 with one stop, before exiting with six minutes remaining. Sophomore Emily Brandenburg made one save in her brief appearance. Howard junior goalkeeper Jessamyn Perkins registered five saves.
FMU plays at South Carolina State University on Tuesday at 7 p.m., while Howard plays at the New Jersey Institute of Technology on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
