BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Senior Ashley Fortune and sophomore Kirby Stenard each scored a pair of goals to lead Francis Marion University to a season-ending 5-1 win over Campbell University, Friday night (Nov. 2) in women’s college soccer action.

Francis Marion ends its first year as a full-fledged NCAA Division I member with a 10-7-1 record. It marks the Patriots’ 12th season with double-digit wins in only 13 years of existence.

Both Fortune and Stenard came into the match ranked among the national leaders in points scored per game. Stenard opened the scoring in the eighth minute, utilizing assists from Kiersten Nedervelt and senior Brandi Sutphin. Fortune upped the margin to 2-0 at 20:39 with a shot from just outside the box after a pass from Angela Salem.

An own goal by Campbell in the 26th minute gave the Patriots a 3-0 advantage. The Camels’ Mary Trigg registered her first goal of the season at 31:25 to trim the margin to 3-1.

Stenard took a pass from M.A. Burrows and scored into the lower left corner of the goal at 76:50 and Fortune concluded the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 86th minute.

Stenard ends the season with a team-leading 15 goals, while Fortune tallied nine goals and 14 assists. Fortune finishes her collegiate career with totals of 40 goals and 31 assists.

Senior goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin recorded five saves in her final match for the Patriots. She will leave with a school-record 287 saves. In addition to Fortune and both Sutphins, senior defender Jody Rhoderick also concluded her Patriot playing career.

FMU out shot Campbell 19-14, while both teams took five corner kicks. The Camels drop to 1-14-2.
