FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore forward Yasmean Dixon came off the Francis Marion University bench to tally team-highs of 19 points and nine rebounds as the Patriots cruised by Milligan College 111-86, Tuesday evening (Nov. 20) in non-conference women’s basketball action.
Dixon was one of five Patriots in doubles figures as FMU improved to 2-0 with its highest scoring output in 513 games dating back to a 128-34 win at Morris College on Feb. 13, 1988.
Also in double digits for Francis Marion were Ebony Allen with 14 points, Kevina Ransom 12 (and seven assists), Shannon Singleton-Bates 11, and Creshenda Singletary 10. The Patriots made 47 of an amazing 94 field goal attempts for 54 percent as 14 different players scored.
Junior forward Rikki Baughman led Milligan (1-6) with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Heather Mandela tallied 18 points and seven rebounds off the Lady Buffs’ bench. Hali Sparks and Renee Ensor each chipped in 10 points.
Milligan converted on 12 of its first 19 shots from the floor to take an early 31-22 lead. However, FMU outscored the Lady Buffs 27-10 over the final six minutes of the stanza to carry a 49-41 lead into the locker room at halftime.
A 13-2 spurt early in the second half pushed the margin to 21 points at 75-54 with 13:13 remaining. FMU hit on 19 of its first 29 shots in the final half to take a commanding 94-66 lead with 8:51 left in the contest.
The defeat overshadowed an amazing free-throw shooting exhibition by Milligan, which connected on 33 of 37 from the charity stripe, including 9-of-10 by Baughman.
Francis Marion forced 34 turnovers, 17 in each half, and recorded 21 steals, the highest team total in 201 games. FMU held a 76-28 advantage in points-in-the-paint, while outrebounding the Lady Buffs 49-37.
Francis Marion plays host to The Apprentice School on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. on Florence County Schools Appreciation Night. The Patriot men will play Newberry College at 7:30 p.m. Milligan returns to action on Nov. 28 when it hosts Tennessee Wesleyan University at 5:30 p.m.
