FLORENCE, S.C. – Junior forward Clemente Martin scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Newberry College to a 76-66 non-conference win over Francis Marion University, Saturday night (Nov. 24) in men’s college basketball action, handing the Patriots their first loss of the season.
Junior Ziyadah Carter and Houston Power paced the FMU (3-1) attack with 12 points apiece.
Martin eclipsed his career high of 27 points set earlier in the week, while nailing 11 of 15 shots from the floor. Guard Grant Domsic came off the Newberry bench to tally 17 points, including four three-pointers, while Stephane Bakinde added 11 points and seven rebounds as the Indians evened their record at 2-2.
Francis Marion held a 27-19 lead following a three-point play by point guard Crayton Jones with 3:11 left before halftime. Newberry then outscored the Patriots 16-5 to close the stanza and carried a 35-32 advantage into the locker room at intermission. The Indians drained six of their final seven field goal attempts during the run.
Newberry never relinquished the lead in the second half. Francis Marion pulled to within three points on several occasions, and following a basket by Sam Smith, trailed only 53-48 with 8:08 remaining. However, the Patriots missed their next five shots as Newberry scored five points to go ahead 58-48 following a layup by Vytautas Valiulis.
A layup by Power with 4:47 left trimmed the margin to 58-52, but that would be as close as the Patriots would get. Newberry shot 50 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes, while holding FMU to 35.5 percent shooting.
Francis Marion was outrebounded 43-29 and the Indians held a 16-7 advantage in second-chance points.
Francis Marion will play host to Morris College on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., while Newberry hosts Limestone College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
