PEMBROKE, NC – Junior guard Jennifer Dyer scored 22 points to lead four players in double figures as 24th-ranked Francis Marion University coasted past UNC Pembroke 101-82, Wednesday evening (Jan. 16) in Peach Belt Conference women’s basketball action.
The Patriots improve to 11-1 overall and 4-1 in the PBC with their seventh straight win. It marked only the second time in the 50-game series with UNCP that a team cracked the 100-point barrier. FMU won in Pembroke 105-45 on Feb. 3, 1999.
Following Dyer for the top-ranked scoring team in NCAA Division II was Creshenda Singletary with 14 points, while Brittany Young and Yasmean Dixon added 13 each. Dyer was seven of seven at the free throw line and drained a trio of three-pointers. Singletary grabbed seven rebounds, while Young dished off four assists.
Guard Victoria Willis paced UNCP (6-7, 1-5) with 14 points, while center Natalie Ray added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The first 20 minutes featured 35 combined fouls as FMU crept out to a 54-39 advantage. A 14-2 run late in the stanza expanded a six-point Patriot margin to 49-31. Despite all the fouls, UNCP could not capitalize as the Lady Braves missed 15 charity tosses in the opening half.
UNCP closed to within 58-45 two minutes into the second half, but FMU quickly pieced together a 12-1 spurt, highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers by Dyer and Singletary. After a brief Lady Braves’ rally cut the deficit to 72-52, Francis Marion again exploded with a 20-5 spurt to lead 92-57 with 8:20 remaining.
UNCP outscored the FMU reserves 21-7 over the final 6:50 to get the final margin under 20 points.
FMU hit a season-high equaling 10 three-pointers, while connecting on 21 of 30 free throws.
Francis Marion plays at Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville, Ga., on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the radio at 100.1 FM The Fan. The Patriots return home next Wednesday to face Augusta State University on the team’s first-ever White-Out Night.
