MORROW, GA – After trailing by only two points at halftime, Francis Marion University shot only 22.7 percent over the final 20 minutes leading to a 62-44 Peach Belt Conference road loss to Clayton State University, Saturday (Jan. 26) in men’s action.
Junior forward Ziyadah Carter was the lone Francis Marion (8-7, 2-6) player in double figures with 14 points coming off the Patriot bench. Carter connected on 6-of-12 shots from the floor, while his teammates managed only 10-of-43.
Guard Tracy Williams led three Clayton State (9-8, 5-5) players in double digits with 18 points and eight rebounds.
Francis Marion led by seven points, 12-5, in the early going, but a 13-3 Laker run gave Clayton State an 18-15 advantage. Clayton State led 30-28 at intermission, despite 10 points from Carter in the opening frame.
A layup by FMU senior Rodrick Burton knotted the score at 30-30 early in the second stanza, but Clayton State tallied 14 of the game’s next 18 points and never trailed again. FMU hit on only 5-of-22 second- half shots and was 0-for-12 from beyond the three-point arc.
In contrast, Clayton shot 54.5 percent (12-of-22) over the final 20 minutes.
