VALDOSTA, GA - One day after scoring 19 runs in two games, 25th-ranked Francis Marion University was limited to five hits and no runs by Valdosta State University in a 8-0 loss Sunday afternoon in non-conference baseball action.
VSU starter Glem Lemke (1-0) scattered three hits in seven innings to get the win. Lemke surrendered hits in the second, third and sixth innings, but did not allow a base runner past second base. He also struck out seven and walking no one. Justin Lamb came on and allowed two hits while striking out five in the final two innings.
Senior shortstop Greg Phelps collected two of the Patriots' five hits. Freshman right-hander Phillip Mozingo (0-1), the first of four FMU pitchers, allowed just two hits and one unearned run in the opening two innings, but was tagged with the loss.
Francis Marion's (2-1) best scoring chance came in the top of the ninth as pinch-hitters Trent Knight and Bryan Brown reached on a pair of two-out hits. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, but Lamb struck out Jeff Felten to end the game.
Francis Marion plays at Newberry College on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
Valdosta State (1-2) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as it took advantage of an FMU error. Logan Pierce opened the inning by reaching second when his ground ball was misplayed by Keon Graves at third base. A ground ball moved Pierce to third, allowing him to score on Shawn Keill's base hit for a 1-0 Blazer lead. The Blazers upped their advantage to 2-0 in the third. Patriot reliever Brandon White walked Jon Koenigsfeld and Keill to open the inning. Two batters later, Daniel Muniz singled through the right-side of the infield, scoring Koenigsfeld.
VSU added anther run in the fourth as Jesse Barfield was hit by a pitch and moved to second when Calem Ray walked. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base, allowing Barfield to score on a Pierce ground out for a 3-0 Valdosta State lead.
Valdosta State added a pair of runs in the seventh. Koenigsfeld doubled to open the inning and moved to third on a wild pitch. Sidney Spell proceeded to single up the middle, allowing Koenigsfeld to score. After fielder's choice erased Spell, Wes Hyman entered the game as a pinch runner and scored when Chase Blackwood tripled to right-center for a 5-0 Blazer lead.
A three-run Spell home run, which scored Pierce and Koenigsfeld, in the bottom of the eighth closed out the scoring.
Spell tallied three hits and five runs batted in to lead the Blazers while Koenigsfeld finished with a pair of hits.
