Earlier in the day, Anderson University beat UNC Pembroke 12-5, and over in Hartsville, Coker College downed Brevard College 14-6 and Brevard beat Lander University 16-10.
The four-day event will conclude on Sunday with three games on FMU’s Cormell Field: Anderson facing Lander at noon, Brevard playing FMU at 3 p.m., and UNCP playing St. Andrews at 6 p.m.
With its fourth straight victory, FMU ups its record to 6-1 while St. Andrews dips to 1-4.
In addition to his productive day on the base paths, Phelps had an RBI single in a five-run second inning. Justin Greene, Jared Barkdoll, Camron Asbill, Keon Graves, and Ryan Hewitt all rapped out two hits for the Patriots with Greene, Barkdoll, and Tyler Lehman all collecting two RBIs.
Altogether, Francis Marion had 18 hits and took advantage of four St. Andrews errors and eight bases-on-balls by Knight pitchers.
Freshman righty Phillip Mozingo, a product of West Florence High School, was the first of four FMU hurlers and he earned the win to even his mark at 1-1. St. Andrews’ starter Caleb Johnson (0-2) absorbed the loss.
Left fielder Alex Ridout was the lone St. Andrews player with two hits, and he also drove in one run.
Francis Marion built a 16-1 lead after six innings.
