The W-B pitches Francis Marion past Jaguars 1-0 and 6-4

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore southpaw Michaela Wolf and senior righty Melanie Bisek combined to allow no earned runs as Francis Marion University swept a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader from Augusta State University 1-0 and 6-4, Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 27).

FMU improves to 14-4 overall and 4-2 in the PBC, while the Lady Jaguars drop to 11-5 and 1-3 and are swept for the first time this season.

In the opener, Wolf (10-2) blanked ASU on only three singles.  She struck out one and walked only one.

The Patriots scored the game’s lone run on an RBI squeeze bunt by junior Lakyn Bendle in the bottom of the third inning.  FMU junior shortstop Shannan Tyson was the only player to record two hits in the game.

ASU senior Amy Dumas (4-2) was the hard-luck loser.  She allowed only five hits, while fanning nine.  ASU got two of its hits to leadoff the third frame, but Wolf retired the next three batters to end the inning.  Leann Barber singled with one out in the sixth, moved to second on a deep fly out, advanced to third on a passed ball, but was stranded when Amber Hunt lined out to the left fielder.

In the second game, Francis Marion scored five times in the bottom of the third.  The outburst was highlighted by an infield RBI single by Stevie Arrand and a grand slam home run by Jessica Birchmeier.

The Lady Jaguars responded with four runs in their next at bat, all coming when the inning was prolonged by a pair of two-out FMU fielding errors.  Jessie Sadlowsky stroked a 2-run single and Barber lashed a two-run double off the center field fence.

Bisek (3-1) scattered eight hits through 6.2 innings.  Wolf came on to get the game’s final out and earn her first career save after Barber and Ashley Roberts singled in the final inning.

Tyson also had two hits in the second contest and extended her hitting streak to 13 games.  Kat Beauvais had a pair of doubles for the Patriots and scored twice.

Senior Jacklyn Benenhaley (3-1) allowed five runs and was tagged with the loss.  Barber went 3-for-4 in game two, while Roberts was 2-for-4.

FMU plays at St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Sunday at 1 p.m., while ASU hosts Columbus State University for a PBC twinbill on Saturday at 1 p.m.
