Francis Marion splits baseball twinbill with AASU, earns series win

FLORENCE, SC – Three Francis Marion University pitchers blanked eighth-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University on eight hits as the seventh-ranked Patriots claimed a 2-0 victory in the opening game of Saturday’s (March 1) Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.  The Pirates salvaged the third game of the series by blasting six FMU hurlers for a 15-2 win in the nightcap.

Francis Marion is now 16-4 overall and 5-1 in the PBC, while AASU stands at 9-3 and 3-3.  Francis Marion will entertain the nation’s top-ranked team, Mount Olive College, for single games on Tuesday and Wednesday at 3 p.m. both days.  AASU plays the University of Findlay on Monday at 3 p.m. in the Savannah Invitational.

In the opener, sophomore right-hander Erik Sommerville improved his record to 3-0 with six scoreless innings.  He has allowed only six hits in his last 18 innings.  Sophomore righty Zane Petty tossed a scoreless seventh, and senior southpaw Zach Farry pitched the final two innings to earn his seventh save of 2008.

FMU catcher Jared Barkdoll doubled to lead off the fourth inning and scored on an RBI single by Keon Graves.  Outfielder Camron Asbill tripled to lead off the fifth and came home on a sacrifice fly by senior shortstop Greg Phelps.

Phelps doubled in the fourth inning of game one and tripled in the sixth inning of the second contest to stretch his hitting streak to 28 games, second-longest in team history behind a 30-game streak by Michael Bartell during the 1988 and 1989 seasons.

AASU senior right-hander Ross Partee (1-1) was tagged with the loss although he surrendered only seven hits in 7.2 innings.

FMU freshman second baseman Tyler Lehman had two hits for the Patriots in the opener, while AASU’s Josh Wilson and Kenny Cail both went 2-for-4 for the Pirates.

Leading 2-1 entering the third inning of the second game, AASU exploded for eight unanswered runs over the next four frames to go up 10-1.  Righty Jeff Chase (2-0) was the beneficiary of the outburst.  FMU sophomore left-hander Cory Deering (3-1) allowed six runs and was the loser.

Nick Pyron (4-for-6) and Joey Davis (4-for-6) paced the 25-hit attack for AASU.  Davis drove in three runs, while Derrek Miller homered and drove in four.

Asbill had two hits in the second contest, while freshman Preston Shuey and Josh Smith drove in the two FMU runs.
