FMU golfers rally for third-place finish at ECU’s Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Junior Andrew Pitcher carded a final-round two-under-par 70 and sophomore Christopher Couch shot a one-under 71 on Sunday to help rally Francis Marion University to a third-place finish at the rain-shortened Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate Golf Tournament hosted by East Carolina University.

Francis Marion was tied for fourth after Friday’s opening round and Saturday’s play was washed out by rain.  The 36-hole event was played on the par 72, 7,102-yard Ironwood Golf & Country Club course.

St. John's University golfer Keegan Bradley and Newberry College's Ben Lown each carded a two- round total of six-under 138 to claim co-individual medalist honors.  Bradley (72-66=138), who began the day four strokes out of the lead, carded the lowest round of the tournament by shooting a six-under 66 on Sunday.

Couch paced FMU with a third-place finish at 70-71=141, only three strokes behind the medalists.  Junior Ronan O’Connor (72-74=146) tied for 18th place, while Pitcher (77-70=147) tied for 25th and Peter McGibney (78-73=151) and Keith Crowley (76-75=151) tied for 50th position.

Bradley's performance helped St. John's (294-278=572) win the team title by 10 strokes over Newberry (286-296=582). FMU (295-288=583) edged Liberty University (290-294=594), while the host ECU Pirates (295-290=595) finished in fifth place in the 15-team field.

FMU will compete in the Palisades Collegiate Golf Classic in Charlotte, N.C., on April 14-15.
