GREENWOOD - The No. 20 Francis Marion men's tennis team upset No. 16 Anderson, 5-4, Thursday afternoon in the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Region semifinals at Lander University's Joe Cabri Courts.
FMU (17-5) will face host Lander at 11 a.m. Friday for the regional championship and the automatic berth into the national tournament, May 14-17, in Houston, Tex. Anderson ends the season at 18-8.
Francis Marion took a 2-1 lead in doubles when No. 2 Franklyn Emmanuel/Danajaya Mayadunne def. Anderson's Jan Shiebler/Jose Augusta Gaspar, 8-4; and No. 3 Karl Rogers/Mathew Keth def. Anderson's Andres Weisskopf/Marc Pibernat, 9-7. Anderson's No. 1 doubles team of Renato Assuncao/Philip Pakebusch def. FMU's Oshada Wijemanne/Dilshod Sharifi, 8-9, for the other doubles point.
The deciding match came at No. 5 singles, when FMU's Karl Rogers broke the 4-4 deadlock when he defeated the Trojans' Srikrishna Ramanatha, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
In other singles matches, No. 1 Philip Pakebusch (AU) def. Franklyn Emmanuel, 6-3, 6-1; No. 2 Oshada Wijemanne (FMU) def. Renato Assuncao, 6-4, 6-2; No. 3 Dilshod Sharifi (FMU) def. Jose Augusta Gaspar, 7-5, 6-1; No. 4 Andres Weisskopf (AU) def. Bastian Czwalinna, 6-2, 7-5; and No. 6 Marc Pibernat (AU) def. Matthew Keth, 6-2, 6-0.
