FLORENCE, SC – Junior forward Jill Hutchinson scored a first-half goal and assisted on a second-half tally to lead 20th-ranked Wake Forest University to a 3-0 non-conference win over Francis Marion University, Friday afternoon (Aug. 29) in women’s soccer action.
Wake Forest, the first nationally ranked Division I opponent to visit the FMU campus, improves to 2-0-0, while the Patriots fall to 0-3-0. After going unbeaten in their previous 14 home matches, Francis Marion has now dropped two consecutive home contests and is now 88-18-5 all-time in Florence.
Hutchinson broke a scoreless deadlock in the 13th minute when she took a pass from Sarah Winslow, turned and fired an 11-yard shot past FMU goalkeeper Emily Brandenburg.
Junior Caitlin Farrell doubled the margin to 2-0 with an unassisted goal at 15:15. She drove a loose ball six yards into the goal, a play that concluded a possession that that saw Wake Forest take consecutive corner kicks.
Francis Marion nearly trimmed the margin to 2-1 in the 60th minute. Sophomore Margaret Fanning’s free kick from beyond midfield bounced over the head of Demon Deacon goalkeeper Amanda Barasha, but then rolled one foot outside the left post.
Wake Forest scored an insurance goal in the 76th minute. Hutchinson fed junior Allie Sadow with a pass down the left side and Sadow angled an 11-yard shot past Brandenburg at 75:06.
Wake Forest outshot the Patriots 20-4 and led 5-1 in corner kicks. Barasha made one stop in 72 minutes in goal, while reserve goalkeeper Laura Morse also made one stop.
Brandenburg finished with seven saves.
Barasha’s one stop came in the 26th minute when FMU midfielder Angela Salem nearly caught the keeper straying too far from the goal line. Barasha made a leaping stop of Salem’s shot from 27 yards out.
FMU returns to action on Friday when the Patriots play Furman University in the Carolina Cup. The match will begin at 5 p.m. in Columbia on the campus of the University of South Carolina. Wake Forest hosts UNC Wilmington on Sunday at 1 p.m.
