COLUMBIA, SC - Rachel Fry scored with 2:15 remaining in regulation to give Furman University a 2-1 win over Francis Marion University, Friday evening (Sept. 5) in the opening match of the Carolina's Cup in Columbia.
Host South Carolina defeated Clemson 1-0 in the nightcap. Francis Marion (0-4-0) will face Clemson on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at USC's Stone Stadium, while Furman (2-0-1) will face the Gamecocks later on Sunday afternoon.
FMU and Furman battled through a scoreless first half, although the Paladins outshot the Patriots 9-2. Furman's Martha Hall scored off Sara El-Shami's free kick at the 56:45 mark to put the Paladins up 1-0.
FMU tied the score with less than 10 minutes left when freshman Amanda Hall scored her first collegiate goal, off an assisted from Taylor Jenkins, as she beat the defense on the left side at 80:48.
For the match, Furman outshot Francis Marion 20-5, but Patriot goalkeeper Emily Brandenburg registered eight saves. Furman also led in corner kicks 5-1.
The meeting was the first-ever regular-season match between the two programs.
