COLUMBIA, SC – Clemson University scored two first-half goals within a seven-minute span and the Tigers went on to claim a 3-0 victory over Francis Marion University, Sunday morning (Sept. 7) in the Carolina’s Cup (women’s soccer), hosted in Columbia at Stone Stadium.
Francis Marion drops to 0-5-0 against arguably its toughest schedule ever. The Patriots will take part in the Mountaineer Invitational in Boone, N.C., this coming weekend. FMU will face UNC Wilmington on Friday at 12 noon and host Appalachian State University on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Katie Vogel gave Clemson (4-1-0) a 1-0 lead with a goal at 30:39. The margin doubled at 37:14 when Molly Franklin knocked in a penalty kick.
Tara Cort scored the only goal of the second half, off a Franklin assist, at 70:44.
Francis Marion junior goalkeeper Emily Brandenburg made five saves in 74:50 in goal. Freshman Casey Durham played the final 15:10 but did not face a shot-on-goal. Clemson’s Paula Pritzen (two saves in 70:44) and Marci Elpers (3 saves in 19:16) combined for the shutout.
Clemson led in shots 19-7 and the Tigers accounted for all nine of the match’s corner kicks.
FMU junior midfielder Angela Salem and freshman forward Amanda Hall were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The University of South Carolina won the tournament with a 2-1 overtime win over Furman University in Sunday’s second match.
