Carson-Newman Defeats Francis Marion 5-0

JEFFERSON CITY, TN – Sophomore Ben Backstrom scored two goals in the opening 10:47 of the match and Carson-Newman College went on to claim a 5-0 non-conference victory over Francis Marion University, Saturday night (Sept. 13) in men’s soccer action.

The Eagles improved to 2-2 in their first game under the new McCown Field lights. FMU drops to 1-3-1 on the season.

Although outshot 25-10, Francis Marion did manage nine shots on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net. Sophomore midfielder Kyle Clinton had three of the shots on goal. FMU sophomore goalkeeper Clark Richeson made five saves.

Each team took only one corner kick.

The Eagles’ first goal of the night came from Backstrom in the fifth minute, with senior Carl Ferreira getting the assist. Five minutes later, Backstrom would give the Eagles their second goal of the game, with the assist by senior Marcus Cabralis.

Cabralis earned his second assist of the night when junior Thomas Ostvold found the back of the net on a corner kick in the 18th minute of the game, extending C-N’s lead to 3-0.

Freshman Robert Hill added to the Eagles’ lead on an unassisted goal in the 56th minute. The final Eagle goal would come from sophomore Matthew Finlay, with an assist by Gustavo Jimenez, in the 78th minute.

Carson-Newman sophomore goalkeepers Jordan Moore and Michael Alley combined for the shutout. The pair had nine saves: Moore with six and Alley three.

Francis Marion returns to action on Tuesday when the Patriots play host to Wingate University at 4 p.m.
