FLORENCE, S.C. – Freshman forward Amanda Hall knocked in a rebound with 15 seconds remaining to give Francis Marion University a 2-1 win over Liberty University, Sunday afternoon (Oct. 5) in non-conference women’s soccer action.
Francis Marion (1-10-1) picks up its first win of 2008, while keeping the Flames winless at 0-9-1.
The Patriots appeared headed for their second overtime experience in the past eight days. Junior midfielder Angela Salem began the deciding sequence with a 19-yard shot from the top of the box. Liberty freshman goalkeeper Karen Blocker made a diving save to her left, but could not corral the ball. Hall picked up the loose ball and fired a 6-yard shot into the net.
Francis Marion outshot the Flames 14-10 and both sides took three corner kicks. FMU freshman goalkeeper Casey Durham registered four saves in her first home start, while Blocker made six stops.
Liberty took a 1-0 advantage at 22:09 when sophomore Maria Owen touched in a corner kick by Maggie Woody. Less than two minutes later, FMU freshman Kiley Williams evened the score at 1-1 with a blistering 22-yard shot off a failed clearance by the Flames defense.
While there were seven combined shots-on-goal over the final 45 minutes, none were serious scoring opportunities until the winning sequence. After the goal, Liberty was unable to get off a potential tying shot in the final seconds.
Francis Marion will play host to Winthrop University on Wednesday at 4 p.m., while Liberty hosts High Point University on the same afternoon, also at 4 p.m.
