LAWRENCE, Kan. -  Junior forward Shannon McCabe tied a school record with three goals and an assist as the University of Kansas beat Francis Marion University 7-0, Sunday afternoon (Oct. 19) in non-conference women’s soccer action at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.

Francis Marion slips to 2-12-1 after its first trip to the Midwest to play a pair of Big 12 Conference members. The Jayhawks improve to 10-5-1 while setting a school record for most goals scored in a match.

Kansas outshot FMU 34-4 and amassed all 10 of the match’s corner kicks.

McCabe scored back-to-back goals in the first half to give Kansas a 2-0 advantage at the break. In the 25th minute, she laced a shot from the near corner of the box that bent over FMU goalkeeper Casey Durham’s head and into the upper corner on the far side of the net.  Just over three minutes later, McCabe bent a corner kick to the near post that snuck over the line despite a last ditch effort by a Patriot defender to clear.

McCabe completed her hat trick by cleaning up a rebound in the 54th minute off a Jessica Bush shot. Bush blasted a ball to the far post that Francis Marion goalkeeper Emily Brandenburg could only deflect onto the foot of an onrushing McCabe.

Already leading 4-0, the Jayhawks scored three goals over a four-minute span to complete the 7-0 shutout. Freshman Kortney Clifton scored the Jayhawks’ fifth goal after McCabe played a through-ball to her from the middle of the field.

Durham finished with five saves in 51 minutes of action, while Brandenburg had five saves in  nearly 39 minutes.

Francis Marion’s Rachel Rubin and Kristi Caldwell accounted for the two Patriot shots-on-goal, in the 60th and 87th minute respectively. 

The Jayhawk goalkeeping tandem of junior Julie Hanley and senior Stephanie Baugh made a total of two saves to earn the team’s fifth shutout of the season, and second in a row.

Francis Marion plays at Longwood University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
