FLORENCE, SC – Senior midfielder Kiersten Nedervelt scored on a 12-yard shot three minutes into overtime as Francis Marion University claimed a chilly 1-0 win over Coastal Carolina University, Monday afternoon (Oct. 27) in women’s soccer action.
Francis Marion (4-12-1) wins for the fourth time in its last six outings and captures its second straight overtime victory. Coastal Carolina drops to 10-6-0 and remains winless in three all-time meetings against the Patriots.
Nedervelt scored her first goal of 2008 into the left corner of the Chanticleer goal at the 93:15 mark of the first extra session. The sequence began with a pass ahead from senior Brandi Bonifay to Nedervelt who delivered the ball to freshman Stephanie Squirewell inside the box. Squirewell then laid the ball off to her right where Nedervelt delivered the game-winning score. It was her third career goal and first match-winner in 66 appearances. The assist was Squirewell’s first collegiate point.
FMU junior goalkeeper Emily Brandenburg registered six saves en route to her first career shutout. The Patriots outshot Coastal Carolina 13-9 and led in shots-on-goal 7-6. The Chanticleers held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks
Coastal Carolina sophomore goalkeeper Amy Haggard made five stops.
Both squads had opportunities to get on the scoreboard in regulation. Patriot freshman Kiley Williams had her direct kick glance off the left post in the ninth minute and Brandenburg touched a blast by Coastal Carolina’s Emily McColl off the crossbar in the 20th minute. FMU junior Angela Salem had a two-shot sequence in the 33rd minute that saw her first shot cleared off the goal line by Coastal Carolina’s Anna Tupy and then Haggard grabbed her second attempt.
At the 60:32 mark, Williams hit the crossbar with a shot that nearly bounced down and in, and then in the 68th minute a header by Chanticleer forward Dana Gentile went just high and over the crossbar.
Coastal Carolina did not have a shot attempt in the overtime period.
Francis Marion will continue its three-match season-ending homestand on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. contest against South Carolina State University.
