Francis Marion blanks SC State 7-0 behind Williams' hat trick

FLORENCE, SC – Freshman forward Kiley Williams scored three times and assisted on a fourth goal as Francis Marion University blanked South Carolina State University 7-0, Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 29) in women’s soccer action.

FMU picks up its second straight shutout and its fifth win in the last seven matches to improve to 5-12-1. The Bulldogs drop to 2-10-2 in their regular-season finale. Francis Marion will conclude its 2008 slate on Saturday when the Patriots play host to Campbell University at noon for Senior Day.

Williams’ hat trick was the 24th in the program’s short 14-year history, and the first for a Patriot this season. The Shavertown, Pa., native now has five goals this season.

Early in the match, junior defender Rachel Rubin scored her first career goal at the 1:24 mark on a 12-yard shot from the left side after receiving a pass from Williams. Freshman Amanda Hall upped the margin to 2-0 with a 12th-minute goal that was assisted by Angela Salem and Taylor Jenkins. Jenkins increased the lead to 3-0 with a 23-yard blast that followed a pass from Salem in the 32nd minute.

Williams scored her three tallies in the second half, while senior midfielder Kiersten Nedervelt scored on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to account for the other Patriot goal. Nedervelt also assisted on Williams’ first score, while senior Brandi Bonifay, sophomore Rebecca Nelson, and sophomore M.A. Burrows also recorded assists on second-half scores.

Patriot junior goalkeeper Emily Brandenburg needed to make only one save, as Francis Marion outshot S.C. State 13-5 and led 12-1 in shots-on-goal and 5-2 in corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Alechia Brothers registered five saves. The Bulldogs played with only 10 players for the final 65 minutes after midfielder Kelsey Mims left the match with a leg injury. It became a two-man advantage for FMU when an S.C. State player received a red card in the 82nd minute.

S.C. State’s only shot-on-goal came at 9:44 on an attempt from the far right wing by Sasha Bender, but Brandenburg made the stop.
